The 3rd Annual Women’s Rugby League Varsity Match took place at Iffley Road on Monday 10th June and appropriately for a summer sport the sun was out at the famous old setting.
Oxford got off to an extremely good start scoring a try before Cambridge had even touched the ball, George Rought-Whitta powered through their defence and scored under the posts. Unfortunately for the Tabs: one of many to come from the strong half-back. And it wasn’t long before the next try came as scrum half, Kelly-Anne Ferguson broke through the line and fished the ball out wide to score in the corner. Cambridge didn’t see much ball in the first 20 minutes and despite their strong running didn’t pose much threat to a well organised Oxford defence lead in the middle by Tatiana Cutts and Jesse Van Der Grient. At the end of the first twenty Oxford were already comfortably ahead. Oxford made some changes for the second twenty minute period but were still too strong for the Cambridge team adding a few more points to the score board. However the brute force of the Cambridge attack became too much to handle for the Oxford side and they managed to get four points with a deserved try. But Oxford came back stronger, scoring a couple of tries before the whistle ended the second twenty. Great plays in the backs from Charlie Brown and winger Tess Braunerova. The strong side that started the last twenty period was bound to continue to test a tired Cambridge defence. And it sure did. Great running from Libby Knowles and Tania Nguyen proved too much to handle for Cambridge followed by a fantastic run from Ele Forbes at hooker. A few more tries added to the score line and the final score was 72 – 4 in favour of the home team. Congratulations to Esther Gosling for converting tries and to the girls whose first game of rugby it was.
