OURFC celebrated a fundraising milestone ahead of a busy 2014/15 season yesterday by donating £2,000 to Abingdon-based cancer charity Against Breast Cancer at the historic Iffley Road ground.
At 12pm, the team and their coaches took a break from pre-season preparations to present representatives of the charity with a cheque, the result of OURFC’s fundraising efforts from last season.
OURFC have supported the locally-based Abingdon charity for a number of years, with the Blues wearing pink shirts during an annual charity match in support of breast cancer awareness and research, in addition to the very popular annual calendar.
Wendy Taylor Hill, Charity Director at Against Breast Cancer commented “the funds that the team at OURFC raised last year have helped fund vital research into the prevention of breast cancer recurrence and we are now able to begin some exciting new immunology research here at Oxford University. Look out for the launch next month! Thanks guys for all your support, we really appreciate it.”
This presentation marks the beginning of the new season, which kicks off in earnest on the 13th September with the Blues touring Russia.
The first chance to see the Blues at home this season will be on 30th September when Newport Gwent Dragons visit Iffley Road.
In the build up to the Varsity Match, where Oxford will look to secure a record breaking 5th consecutive win, the Blues will take on Leicester Tigers, London Wasps, Bristol, Worcester Warriors & Northampton Saints.
