The Greyhounds in action against Chinnor in the 2012 County Cup Final

The Greyhounds Oxfordshire County Cup run came to an end at the hands of Oxford Harlequins at Abingdon School on Sunday afternoon when they went down by 28 points to 15. Harlequins started the stronger and were soon 12 nil ahead with two tries and one conversion. The Greyhounds hit back with a well constructed try well finished by left wing Jack Glancy (New) converted by centre Basil Strang (St Stephen’s House) and Strang narrowed the gap to just two points when he added a penalty, however on the stroke of half-time Harlequins extend their lead to five point with a penalty of their own. Half-time 10 – 15.

The twenty minutes after half-time saw the Greyhounds enjoy their best period of the match, assisted by two Harlequins players visiting the sin bin, but they could only manage one unconverted try from second row Johny Marsden which brought the scores level. However with Harlequins restored to fifteen the hit back and added two further penalties to put themselves six points clear, meaning the Greyhounds needed a converted try to win. As they looked to move the ball wide and create an overlap, a spilled ball was pounced on by the Harlequins wing who kicked ahead, gathered the loose ball and scored near the post for a straight forward conversion, which was the last play of the match and gave Harlequins a rather flattering scoreline 28 points to 15 and sees them enter the hat for semi-final draw.
