St Hilda’s College only started to accept male students as recently as 2008 and only formed their own rugby club in 2010, so to win the Inter-Collegiate 7’s Competition on Sunday afternoon was a fantastic achievement for such a young college rugby team. Fifteen teams entered the competition but on the day unfortunately only twelve teams turned up, so a quick re-draw was undertaken with four pools of three created, with fixtures taking place at Iffley Road and Christ Church College ground. The afternoon saw very mixed weather, with sunshine interspersed with torrential rain, however this did not deter the participants and indeed led to some spectacular 10 scoring dives as players slid home on the wet surface. Six teams qualified from the pools, with St Hilda’s and Balliol receiving byes to the semi-finals, the two quarter-finals saw Hertford beat Merton/Mansfield 31 points to 5 and Wadham defeat St Peter’s/Graduate Barbarians 29 points to 7. The semi-finals both took place in perhaps the worst of the weather, but all four teams managed to play some exciting 7’s with St Hilda’s dominating Hertford 38 points to nil and Wadham, with Ralph Weir in particular reveling in the conditions, seeing off Balliol 24 points to 5. Much to Ralph’s dismay, come the final the sun was once again out and St Hild’a proved beyond doubt that they were the strongest team on the day as they won comfortably by 24 points to nil to be crowned 2015 College 7’s Champions. Congratulations to Captain Charles Pope and his team.
