The OURFC men’s 7’s squad enjoyed a mixed opening day at the 12th edition of the Centrale 7’s in Paris. They started in good form with a 21 points to 14 victory over the University of Heidelberg, tries from Henry Lamont (2) & Basil Strang, cons Strang (2), Lamont (1). In their second match they lost to the Parisian University select squad, JDC 24 points to 5, Matt Geiger scoring Oxfords only try. In their final match they faced the Moroccan international 7 and came up short 12 points to 5, Will Wilson knotching the try. At 11.30am, local time, on Thursday Oxford will face the Australian invitational 7, Tribe 7 in the quarter finals.
Despite a strong performance against Tribe 7, the Oxford team came up short by 22 points to 7 against the eventual winners of the tournament, with a try and conversion from Will Wilson. The Plate semi-final was a repeat of the final pool game as they once again faced Morocco, however the Oxford team fell foul of the referee with a yellow card costing the team the chance to overcome the North African international team, as they went down 19 points to 7, with a try form Basil Strang and conversion from Will Wilson. Their final game to determine 7ht/8th place, was definitely a game too far as the squad were both physically and mentally tired from two days of sevens, and they lost out to the French University side.
Whilst the results did not always go Oxford’s way, the trip was highly beneficial as a development tool for some of the younger members of the squad who were exposed to a very high level of student 7’s.
