Tom Mitchell who gained a Blue for Oxford in 2011, led the Team GB Rugby 7’s squad to a well-deserved silver medal at the Rio Olympics on Thursday evening. Team GB went into the final unbeaten having seen off Kenya, Japan and New Zealand in the pool stages, Argentina in a sudden death quarter-final and then 2nd favourites South Africa in a tense semi-final, to take their place in the Gold/Silver Match against the hot favourites and number one seeds Fiji. Unfortunately this match was just one too many for Mitchell and Team GB, as Fiji proved beyond doubt that they are by far the best 7’s rugby playing nation, as they deservedly won the countries first ever Olympic Medal. The Fiji coach, Ben Ryan, also an Oxbridge Blue, successfully coached the OURFC U21 side to Varsity victory in the mid 2000’s before taking on the Director of Rugby role at Newbury RFC.
