Another busy weekend of rugby for OURFC teams kicked off on Friday night under the lights at Iffley Road when the Greyhounds hosted Oxford Harlequins in the quarter final of the Oxfordshire Cup. Looking to continue their winning form with just two and half weeks to go their Varsity Match, the Hounds secured a hard fought win against the local club side who certainly did not go down without a fight. The final score was 22 points to 15 in favour of the students with tries from No 8 John Aaron Henry (Somerville), flanker James Beaufils (Jesus) and second row Hugo McPherson (Lady Margaret Hall), fly-half Seb Haddock (St Edmund Hall) added one penalty and full-back Tom Humberstone (Lady Margaret Hall) two conversions. The semi-finals will take place in February where the Greyhounds will face one of Banbury (the Cup holders), Bicester or Chinnor 2nds who all received quarter final walk-overs!
On Saturday afternoon the Whippets travelled to RMA Sandhurst to take on the new officer recruits and in difficult conditions lost a tightly contested affair by 5 points to 3, Tom Humberstone (Lady Margaret Hall) scoring the Whippets only points with a penalty.
The weekend’s rugby concluded on Sunday afternoon when the Panthers travelled to south-west London to take on Teddington Ladies. Combined with some members for Grove RFC, the Panthers continue to show improvement and provided 13 of the starting XV. In a half dominated by scrums and the Teddington pack, the Panthers went into the break 10-7 down, the single try coming from the superb Katarina Martinovic (St Catherine’s), and conversion by captain, Carolina Matte Gregory (Mansfield). The second half yielded a much improved scrummaging display from the Panthers, but the team struggled to break out of their own half with Teddington outscoring the visitors three tries to one. Final score Teddington 27 – 12 Panthers.
