Following their preseason week and trial match against Oxford Brookes last week the Greyhounds had their first match of the season at Iffley Road on Saturday against a high quality Barnes 2nd XV, that included three former Cambridge Blues with another as part of the coaching team. The game was very competitive throughout with the young Hounds team certainly not intimidated by the bigger and more experienced Barnes outfit, however ultimately experience told as the visitors went back to London with a hard earned 19 points to 7 victory. Three times Cambridge Blue Tom Malaney with two tries from close range was the Barnes Man of the Match, whilst the visitors picked out the eye catching performance of Oxford’s Freshman No 8, Ryan Jones as their pick of their Greyhounds team. The third Barnes try was scored by full-back Harry FB, whilst fly-half Josh Coles added two conversions. For the Greyhounds scrum-half Rob Balfour scored the home sides only try with full-back Tom Dyer adding the extras.
The Greyhounds now look forward to the visit of Old Alleyanians to Iffley Road next Saturday.
