On a perfect night for rugby, the large crowd at Iffley Road were treated to a thrilling game of rugby which saw the Men’s Blues score six tries and emerge victorious over Bristol by 41 points to 24. Left wing Tom Stileman might haven taken the plaudits and the Man of the Match Award for his four tries, but this was a victory built on a team effort from 1 to 23 and will have pleased Captain Conor Kearns and Coach James Wade as they continue preparations towards Varsity.
The first half was very evenly contested with each side scoring two tries, for Oxford Stileman with his first and No 8 Will Wilson, both converted by Kearns, the only difference between the teams was a Kearns penalty, making the score at the interval 17 – 14.
The second half saw the Bristol side take the lead almost immediately after the break to edge in front, however the next 35 minutes belonged to the Blues as Stileman scored a second half hat-trick showing pace, power and determination to terrorise his opposite number, the other seven points coming from a penalty try. Bristol showing the spirit that sees them sitting at the top of the Championship had the last word with a converted try on the stroke of full-time to make the final score 41 points to 24.
