On a miserable afternoon at the Holton Playing Fields, Wheatley RFC prevented the Whippets securing back to back Oxfordshire Shield titles with a well deserved 19 points to 5 victory on Saturday. With term finishing the day before and a number of players unavailable with knocks from Wednesday nights win over Brookes, events transpired against the Whippets meaning a scratch side were always going to be up against it and so it proved.
However, the team showed remarkable spirit and put in an admirable defensive effort to concede just one try from a 5 metre scrum, whilst newcomer to the Whippets, Russell Reid scored a wonder individual try, leaving several Wheatley defenders grasping at thin air as his footwork and speed saw him run in from 40 metres.
OURFC would like to thanks Wheatley for their hospitality and wish them all the best for their semi-final. in the New Year.
