To celebrate and commemorate the life of a fallen Blue, and to introduce a bit more about the Ian Williams (BGI) Foundation, OURFC will be hosting the inaugural Ian ‘BGI’ Williams memorial match on Saturday 16th June, kick off 2.00pm. His former Swansea teammates will step up against his former Oxford teammates in a match full of pride, passion, and of course, plenty of Anglo-Welsh rivalry. And we’ve been assured that this time around, the English won’t have a TMO disallowing perfectly good Welsh tries. Of course, a game of rugby wouldn’t be complete without beers and some form of barbecued meat. The bar in the Pavilion will be open as will our student-budget friendly pitchside bar, and a fully stocked BBQ (including veggie options) will be fired up all afternoon. In case the prospect of some top quality rugby wasn’t exciting enough already, there will also be a raffle with some hefty prizes going (signed shirts, international tickets, the works). After a big day at Iffley Road, there was only one place to find Ian: wreaking havoc with the boys in one of Oxford’s few remaining nightclubs (it is no coincidence that 50% of Oxford’s nightclubs have shut down since Ian graduated). Wristbands will be knocking about for an ‘after party’, where door proceeds will also go straight to the foundation.
Ian’s family – his parents, sister and girlfriend, his OURFC family, his Swansea family, and the wider rugby community – wish for this event to be open and welcoming to all, just as Ian always was. Regardless of whether you knew Ian, have never set foot at OURFC, or have never watched a minute of rugby, clear your diaries and head down to OURFC to end term on a high. It promises to be a big one, and all for a good cause.
