Wednesday night saw the conclusion of the 2018 Cuppers 7’s competition as the eight quarter-finalists who qualified from the preliminary rounds descended upon Iffley Road looking to take the title. This year’s competition was run as ‘XPitch 7’s’ a new RFU initiative to encourage more players to take up 7’s on a smaller than standard size pitch.
In the top half of the draw, the first quarter-final unfortunately saw Wadham/Trinity gain a walk over with the non-arrival of LMH/St Hugh’s. The second quarter-final saw Teddy Hall swamp St Catherine’s by 40 points to 7 to set up a semi-final which Wadham/Trinity edged by 24 points to 19, thus depriving Hall of the 15’s and 7’s Double! In the bottom half of the draw, newcomers St Benet’s dispatched New College 43 points to 7 in their quarter-final, whilst St Hilda’s took care of University College by 45 points 19. In the semi-final, St Benet’s scored 43 points but this time held their opponents St Hilda’s to nil, to set up a final with Wadham/Trinity.
In the final St Benet’s once again topped the 40 point mark, on this occasion posting 42 points with Wadham/Trinity managing 24 in reply to leave St Benet’s Hall crowned 2018 Cuppers 7’s Champions.
