The members of the last Christ Church side to win Rugby Cuppers, in 1979, recently got together following an appeal from the 2018/19 college captain Eoin Simpkins to donate a new set of kit to the current squad.

Bearing the strapline ‘Spirit of ‘79’ on the shirts, the kit was handed over last week by the 1979 captain Reg Clark, together with a mounted photograph of the winning side which will be hung in the Christ Church Buttery.

Commented Clark: “Winning Cuppers with a relatively inexperienced side – one which triumphed largely due to tremendous team spirit – was as important a university rugby experience for me as winning Blues. It remains a vivid memory and has created lifelong friendships amongst the team.”

The winning side will celebrate the 40th anniversary of their win at a special Christ Church Rugby Gaudy next March.
