In a much improved performance on Wednesday evening at Iffley Road the Women’s Blues were unlucky not to secure their first BUCS League win of the season when Swansea University were the visitors. The first 20 minutes saw the home side with plenty of possession and territory but unfortunately they couldn’t turn this pressure into points and it was Swansea who scored first when their pacey full-back ran fully 70 minutes avoiding numerous attempted tackles before off-loading to her winger her scored out wide. Soon after they added a second try to extend their lead to 10 points, but this was to be their final score of the evening as the Blues tightened their defence and attacked more purposefully. Before half-time they rewarded with a try of their won from fly-half Fiona Kennedy which went unconverted, to make the score at the interval 10 – 5 in favour of the visitors.
The second half saw the Blues once again lay siege to the Swansea line, but resolute defence and a lack of precision in attack meant the score didn’t change. ON 60 minutes a Swansea player suffered serious leg injury and paly was held up for 30 minutes whilst she received medical treatment and could be safely taken from the field. The stoppage didn’t help either side and soon after an advantage the Blues had enjoyed was removed as Swansea had to go to uncontested scrums due to front injuries. The remaining 20 minutes play saw both sides battle away but the scoreboard remained the same as Swansea held on secure the win by 10 points to 5.
