Twelve months ago when the Men’s Blues hosted the Crawshays at Iffley Road the heavens opened at kick off and turned the pitch into a quagmire, meaning by full-time the teams were non-recognisable from each other. Fortunately twelve months on and the evening was mild and dry allowing both teams to play with ball in hand and keep the crowd entertained. Whilst a 12 – 7 scoreline, in favour of the Blues, might not suggest an entertaining match it certainly was and but for resolute defence from each team more tries would have been scored.

Oxford had much the better of the first half and ended it 7 points ahead with a try from replacement scrum-half Jack Dalton on his debut, converted by fly-half Louis Jackson. Soon after half time the home side extended their lead with a try from second row Will Garson, this time Jackson was off target with the extras. The Crawshasy were spurred into greater endeavour after this second score and were rewarded with a converted try from a five metre scrum from the replacement No 8. However this proved to be the final score as the Blues hung on to their 12 points to 7 lead.

It was a positive night for the Blues as four players made their debut for the University senior XV, and bodes well for the future. The next and final outing at Iffley Road sees the visit of the Penguins on Wednesday 20th February.
