In their final home match of the season, the Men’s Blues came up a little short against a strong Penguins team on Wednesday, the final score of 34 points to 22 a little flattering to the visitors. It was the home team who started the stronger and they were 12 points ahead after just 11 minutes with tries from hooker John Aaron Henry and No 8 Ryan Jones, the former converted by fly-half Tom Humberstone. However with the half-time interval approaching, the visitors got an important score when full-back Rhys Crane went over in the corner to reduce the margin to just seven points.

The second half saw a reversal of the start of the first as the Penguins grabbed two early tries through replacement wing Nick Etherington and Crane getting a second, fortunately for the Blues both went unconverted. This spurred the students into a reaction and they retook the lead with two further tries, Henry bagging a second and wing Tom Stileman the fourth Blues try. However, that was to be it for the Blues as the Penguins dominated the final quarter to add three tries from No 8 Matt Young, hooker David Banfield and wing Josh Harris, fly-half Scott Meakin finding the target with two conversions to wrap up the scoring.

Oxford’s man of the Match was flanker Sam Ridgway.
