A busy day of rugby concluded at Iffley Road with the Men’s Blues going down to a narrow loss to highly competitive Crawshays Welsh XV by 25 points to 19. The first 35 minutes were dominated by the visitors as there experienced forwards controlled possession and territory which led to them scoring three tries one converted. With half time approaching and the Welsh side leading 17 nil, the Blues hit back with a try form back row forward Bertie Watson converted by fly-half David Wilksinson to narrow the gap to ten points at the interval.

The second half saw the young Blues side take the game to the visitors and they took the lead with opportunist tries from wingers Tom Stileman and Henry Martin, one converted by Wilkinson. In this exciting match Crawshays scored next from their winger to retake the lead, but it was only a slender three point margin. The Blues then camped themselves on the Crawshays line looking for a decisive score, but a scrum penalty relieved the pressure on the visitors who then marched down the field and slotted a penalty of their own, before holding on to secure the six point win.

Next Wednesday the men’s Blues travel to Portsmouth to take on the Royal Navy, kick-off 7.15pm at the United Services Ground, Burnaby Road.
