Over the past week, Iffley Road has played host to the 2021 Men’s Cuppers 7’s competition with twenty college teams entering and enjoying a return to rugby in Trinity Term. Last week saw the group stages with eight teams qualifying for the knock-out matches played on Monday 24th May – New, St Peter’s, St Edmund Hall, St Hilda’s, Keble, Hertford, St Anne’s/St John’s and CCC/Somerville. Four exciting quarter-finals saw St Peter’s, Teddy Hall, Hertford & CCC/Somerville progress to the Cup semi-finals and New, St Hilda’s, Keble and St Anne’s/St John’s to the Plate semi-finals. All four semi-finals in both the Cup and Plate saw very close games, reflecting a very even level of competition across the tournament, with Teddy Hall and Hertford earning their place in the Cup Final and New and St Anne’s/St John’s in the Plate Final. The Plate Final proved a match too far for a gallant St Anne’s/St John’s team who succumbed to New by 21 points to 7. The Cup Final was much more evenly contested and indeed finished 7 points all at full-time, with Teddy Hall finally edging out Hertford with a try after a further three minutes in ‘Golden Point’ extra time.
A huge thank you to all twenty teams and the 200+ players who took part, reflecting the enthusiasm for rugby at the University and also a big shout out to the match officials who facilitated the matches.
