The Greyhounds squad travelled to Grange Rod on Wednesday afternoon to face the Cambridge LX Club looking to make it two from two following the Panthers victory on the same ground last Sunday. The squad had limited preparation time with just two warm-up fixtures and then faced further disruption in the last week with the withdrawal of several players forced in to isolation, but none of this dampened the spirit within the camp, and under the strong leadership of Mark Sutherland left Iffley Road in good heart. That ‘Doggies Spirit’ saw the Greyhounds secure a 12 nil half-time lead, but the second half saw the LX Club up their game, and with the introduction of some strong players off the bench eventually nudge in front with just 5 minutes to go. With time ticking away, the Greyhounds refused to lie down and almost snatched victory at the death, as centre Nick Etherington was hauled down just inches from the try line. The final score was 20 points to 15 in favour of the LX Club, but huge congratulations to all 46 players who proved that Varsity rugby is still alive and kicking despite a Global Pandemic!
Scorers: Luca Tonelli (1T), Nick Etherington (1T), Dylan McGagh (1P, 1C)
All eyes now turn to Welford Road and the Men’s & Women’s Blues Varsities this coming Sunday 4th July.
