After Week 3’s narrow defeat against Bath at home, we arrived in the West Country with a target on our backs and a point to prove. Head coach Scott Hall reminded the team minutes before kick off that the opposition’s took to Instagram to tell their followers “We’ll have them at home”, but evidently, Bath University once again could not follow through against the Blues.
The opening 25 minutes were fiercely contested, with possession of the ball being flung back and forth between the two sides. Though in these moments it was clear who the stronger team was, for the attacking Bath couldn’t bring themselves out of their own 22 where we had them pinned. Then swiftly the deadlock was broken as fly-half Chloe Hawley made a break centre field, and finally scored us the points we deserved, right under the posts no less. The Blues continued this display of dominance with another try following just minutes later. This time, scrum-half Alex Wilkinson took a quick tap-and-go before the opposition had time to line up - she charged through an offside defence, and a clean offload to Number 12 Lilla Berry took us over the line once again. At half time the score was a solid 12-0 to Oxford.
The second half saw Bath attempt to claw their way back into the game, but once again our defensive efforts consistently shut them down. Many knock-one and scrums later, caused by some messy play from both teams, the Blues finally made ground on the offence. As the clock ticked on, our relentless pressure finally broke through once more. A pick-and-go near the opposition try line saw our number 7 Mel Morley muscle her way over, capping off an excellent team effort. Converting her own try took us to our final victory, and the game ended with a triumphant score of 19-0.BLUES WOMEN TAKE HOME THE VICTORY AT BATH AWAY
