Match Report: Women*s Blues vs Sciences Po

The Oxford Women*s Blues were lucky enough to host the touring side from Paris, Sciences Po, in a fast-paced and physical encounter at Iffley Road. The Blues side tested new playing combinations throughout the match, creating a valuable opportunity to build confidence and cohesion ahead of the Varsity fixtures. The team put up a strong fight against a well-drilled and dynamic Sciences Po side.


The visitors struck first taking advantage of their speed to the rucks to secure an early try. Oxford responded well, working through their structures and finding their rhythm. Their patience paid off when number 8, Mel Morley (St John's), powered over the line with a stunning try. Esha Gupta (Madgalen) completed Mel’s work by added the conversation with a wonderful kick.


Science Po showcased their sevens experience playing at a high tempo and showing speed down the wings, stretching Oxford’s defence and running in two more tries before halftime. The Blues faced further challenges when Esha was handed a yellow card just before half time due to cumulative team penalties, leaving them short-handed at a crucial moment.


Oxford’s cohesion grew in the second half as they began to find attacking opportunities. The Blues showed resilience with some key try-saving tackles preventing the score from increasing any higher. The Blues resilience and perseverance was rewarded with an try from Emilia Perry-Poletti (Exeter). Having caught a high ball off a Sciences Po kick, the fullback tore through the defence to touch down and add another 5 points for Oxford. Esha’s precise kicking brought Oxford to 14-21.


Science Po’s speed on the wings and work around the breakdown secured them a few further tries sealing a 14-39 victory. While the result didn’t go their way, the Blues gained valuable experience against a well-drilled side. This provided a crucial test under pressure which will allow the Blues to find-tune their play and build confidence in the run up to Varsity.
